JAPAN - Japanese imports of pork in the 2002/2003 fiscal year were at a record high of 748,000 tonnes, despite the triggering of the safeguard clause from August 2002.

Higher import tariff rates applied through to the end of March 2003.

As soon as the clause was lifted there was a surge in imports during April. Some 102,000 tonnes were imported, including 33,000 tonnes from Denmark.

Total pork imports fell back to 77,000 tonnes in May, with 24,000 tonnes being imported from Denmark.

To avoid once again the triggering of the safeguard clause from August 2003, imports in June will not be able to exceed 40,000 tonnes otherwise second quarter imports will go above the 220,000 tonnes ceiling.

It is quite likely that imports will be above this level and, if so, higher tariffs will apply from August.
