Classical Swine Fever in Slovakia
SLOVAKIA - A report via OIE on the Classical Swine Fever outbreak in the Prievidza district of Slovakia.
(Date of previous outbreak of classical swine fever in domestic pigs in Slovakia reported to the OIE: June 2001).

Information received on 24 November 2003 from Prof. Jozef Bires, Director General, State Veterinary and Food Administration, Bratislava:
Date of the report: 24 November 2003.
Nature of diagnosis: clinical and laboratory.
Date of initial detection of animal health incident: 19 November 2003.
Estimated date of first infection: 10 October 2003.

Description of affected population: a breeding farm with one fattening unit on a separate farm.

Diagnosis:
A. Laboratory where diagnosis was made: State Veterinary Institute, Zvolen.
B. Diagnostic tests used: virological.
Epidemiology:
A. Source of agent / origin of infection: not yet known; under investigation. The farms are in an area where the wild boar population is infected with classical swine fever virus.
B. Mode of spread: there have been direct and indirect contacts between the two farms.
Control measures: in accordance with Directive 2001/89/EC of the Council of the European Union.
