US trade to increase pig disease risk

AUSTRALIA - Pork producers have warned of an increased risk of a serious pig disease now sweeping most of the world coming to Australia if US farmers force their way into the market under the banner of a free trade deal. Australian Pork Ltd says a CSIRO study predicts that under proposed new protocols covering pork imports generally, there is a 94 to 99 per cent chance that post-weaning multi-systemic wasting syndrome would enter Australia within a decade.
