IOWA - There is a growing demand for pork products made from pigs raised outdoors or in a deep-bedded system without the use of antibiotics, growth proponents, or animal by-products. Most producers selling pigs raised in this manner follow the Animal Welfare Institute's standards. Those standards don't allow sows to be housed in crates when giving birth, called farrowing.
