Farm-Scape, Episode 1534

Sask Pork has released a new video designed to answer some of the questions the public is asking about the expansion of Saskatchewan's swine industry.

The approximately 28 minute video documentary, 'Weighing the Facts-Pork Production in Saskatchewan', was produced on behalf of Sask Pork and strives to answer the main questions being asked about swine production.

Sask Pork General Manager Neil Ketilson says, now that prices have recovered and producers have returned to profitability, the hog industry is seeing some much brighter days.

"There's renewed optimism in the industry again and, quite frankly, some of the people that are shipping hogs down into the United States right now as iso-weans and wieners are considering finishing them at home here now that the prices of feeding animals and the market prices are much much better than they have been over the last two years.

Consequently what we've done within Sask Pork is put together a little video that helps the public at large and specifically REDA's, the municipalities, things that.

What the video tries to do is address the issues directly related to hog production. It would cover issues like odor, manure management, manure application, the construction of proper manure storage facilities, community development, the number of jobs, the types of jobs, those kinds of things".

Ketilson says it's a broad based video that addresses the major questions for people who would like a very brief but concise view of the industry.

Production began last fall and the video is now available for distribution.
