Japan Set To Launch Import Curb On Pork

JAPAN - The Japanese government will launch an import curb on pork for the fourth straight year starting August 1, the Tokyo Shimbun reported Wednesday.

The curb would raise the import price to Y510.03 per kilogram from the current Y409.90. But wholesalers have absorbed the price increase for the past three years and retail prices have not changed much.

The amount of pork imports for April-June period is sure to exceed the level in which the curb comes in place, the report says.

The increase in pork imports is due to the ban on U.S. beef imports triggered by the mad cow disease scare in the country.
