Pork Emerging As Australian Meat Of Choice
AUSTRALIA - Pork has emerged as the fastest growing fresh meat choice of Australian consumers, with sales jumping 20 per cent in the past year.
The Roy Morgan statistics also show increasing popularity for chicken, while sales of fresh lamb and beef fell by 5 per cent.
Grower body Australian Pork Limited has launched a national marketing campaign to encourage further growth in the fresh meat market, to offset the impact of imports.
National marketing manager for Australian Pork Limited David Mogford says they hope to get consumers eating pork on a regular basis.
"People think of pork as the pork roast and the traditional pork chops, and they've grown as well. But a lot of the growth, the high growth, is coming from the newer cuts - the less traditional cuts of pork.
"So things like pork mince is up 50 per cent; things like pork steaks are up 38 per cent: now that really is indicating that Australians are starting to see pork as a meal of choice for everyday meals, not the twice a year pork roast that they like to have."
