THE NETHERLANDS - The Dutch company Bestmeat has announced that agreement has been reached on the purchase of pigmeat processor Hendrix Meat Group. This move will increase Bestmeat’s share of the Dutch pigmeat production market to more than 60%.

The Hendrix Meat Group, which is part of the food group Nutreco, has six processing plants in the Netherlands and employs about 1,100 people. Annual turnover in 2003 was approx. € 450 million. Both the Hendrix Meat Group and Dumeco, which also belongs to Bestmeat, have a variety of quality programmes, all based on the IKB quality assurance system for pigs. Nutreco has developed advanced systems for these quality programmes in the areas of food safety and tracking and tracing, and has introduced these within HMG. These systems are part of the purchase deal.

With an annual turnover of € 5 billion, Bestmeat is the second largest meat company in Europe. It also owns the Dutch pigmeat and beef processor Dumeco and the German companies Moksel and Nordfleisch.

The proposed acquisition is still subject to the approval of the European competition authorities.

The Bestmeat Food Group is part of Sovion N.V. (until 1 October Best Agrifund B.V.), which also includes Sobel, which in turn is the holding company of Natural Organic Products (processing of slaughter by-products), Rousselot (gelatine) and Banner (healthcare products). The Group operates world-wide and has 14,000 employees. Its head office is in Best.
