US Pennsylvania Hog Farmers Benefit From High Demand For Pork
PENNSYLVANIA - US Pennsylvania hog farmers are enjoying decent pork prices and high demand for the meat after years of fluctuating profits.
Record rainfall inconvenienced pig farmers for months but helped produce high crop yields. Lower pork prices of past years drove many farmers out of business, but wiped out the pork surplus.
Consumers who once shied away from meat are now eating pork as part of the Atkins and other high-protein or low-carbohydrate diets.
Yet smaller hog farms still face challenges because hogs are typically raised by contract on big farms.
