Red Meat Production Up in US South Dakota
SOUTH DAKOTA - Commercial red meat production for US South Dakota totaled 94.2 million pounds during October.
The figure is up 6 percent from last year and up 9 percent from September, according to the South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service, a branch of the US Department of Agriculture.
October pork production as well as sheep and lamb production rose from one year ago.
Commercial hog slaughter for South Dakota totaled 456,000 head during October compared with 418,700 head last year.
Commercial sheep and lamb slaughter for South Dakota totaled 1,200 head during October compared with 1,000 head last year. Average live weight was 119 pounds, which fell 11 pounds from October 2003. Federally inspected slaughter totaled 1,000 head of lambs and yearlings.
Commercial slaughter data for beef cattle is not published.
