Farmer cleared of 'wild boar' licence rap

UK - A sheriff ruled yesterday there are no wild boars in the UK - only "hairy pigs".

The decision saved the bacon of farmer Ian Hogg, 43. He had faced a fine and up to three months' jail after being accused of breaking the law on keeping dangerous wild animals.

Environmental health officials claimed he needed a licence for a herd kept on his Perthshire smallholding.

But a pig expert told Stirling Sheriff Court the definition "wild boar" was just a gimmick.

Dr Alastair Macdonald, senior lecturer at the Royal (Dick) Veterinary School in Edinburgh, said: "There's nothing I'd regard as a wild pig in the UK, except perhaps in a zoo.
