EU Commission reports stable market prices

Summary

Commission reported a stable markets with an average price of €138 / 100Kg. Poland reported on going problems with their trade with Russian and overproduction. Germany provided an update on the CSF outbreak, the disease appears to be well contained. Trade between EU15 and new MS, and EU25 and 3rd countries is good. Export refunds remain unchanged, and dates for issuing of export licences have been altered to fit around bank holidays. Part 2 of the Czech Republic protocol for authorising methods and the UK request to remove the hot weight derogation will be voted on in April. Finland presented part 1 of their Autofom trail.

Market situation

There is a favourable market situation with an average price of €1.38 / kg, which stable. Poland’s average price is €113 / 100kg - a 5% decrease since last month alone, due to over production and ongoing export problems with Russia. Germany reported a Classical Swine Fever outbreak on 3 farms (which are only 35Km from the Netherlands boarder - an intensive pig area). Sweden reported a 6.6% drop in slaughter numbers.

Since 2004 trade between the E15 and new MS has increased by 58% with 516K tonnes of pork and pork products moving between MS. EU and 3rd country trade has also increased by 5% up to 1.9M Tonnes. Trade with Russia and Japan is good.

No changed proposed.

Exchange of views on a draft Regulation amending Commission Regulation (EEC) No 2967/85 laying down detailed rules for the application of the Community scale for grading pig carcases

Expert working group meeting set (28th March, 9:30 – 1:00, Room B) to prepare a standardised and simplified procedure. Commission requested other experts to run comparison between old and new formula.

Carcases grading in Czech Republic

Part 2 of the protocol presented for addition of the Ultra sound IS–D-05 and Needle apparatus IS-D-15 to classification method. Prepare to vote in April.

Carcases grading in UK – Hot Weight Rebate

2967/85 lays out the “standard carcases” including a hot weight rebate of 2%. UK has derogation from this, and wishes to withdraw this and return to the common rule – simplification that will amend 2004/370/EC (the UK carcase Regs) Prepare to vote in April.

Carcases grading in Finland

Finland protocol 1 is method and planning of trial – experts to consider draft. Commission has requested MS to deter industry from starting trials and this work will be redundant once standardised method is implemented.
