Union Is Urged To Call Off Meat Trade Walkout
UK - Jack McConnell yesterday urged union leaders to call off a planned week-long strike which could result in up to 1,000 job losses in Scotland's meat industry.The proposed walkout by meat inspectors as part of the row over public sector pensions could see many firms going out of business, meat producers claim.
Trade union Unison said it planned to call the UK-wide strike in the Meat Hygiene Service for the whole of next week unless a potential resolution emerges.
The First Minister told MSPs yesterday: "There is no need for disruption to the Meat Hygiene Service. I call today on the union to withdraw the call-out to the meat hygiene inspectors next week which could result in the loss of up to 1,000 jobs in Scotland in meat processing services.
That would be an entirely unjustifiable outcome for a dispute that is not yet anywhere near reaching its conclusion."
