Pig pen changes anger groups

TASMANIA - Proposed animal welfare changes would continue to see Tasmania's pigs kept in tiny concrete pens, animal welfare groups said yesterday.

Public comment has been sought on draft pig welfare changes released by Australian Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran.

The code would allow sows to be kept in sow stalls and farrowing crates for their entire breeding lives until 2017. After that the maximum would be six weeks.

"I'm appalled the pig industry and government consider it's still okay to keep animals in such cruel conditions," AACT campaigner Emma Haswell said.

But pig farmers said they wanted to be part of the solution.
