U.S. farms’ hog count increases over 2005

US - The number of hogs and pigs on U.S. farms on June 1 increased slightly from a year ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported Friday in its quarterly hogs and pigs report.

The 60.9 million head of hogs on U.S. farms was 1percent more than on March1, the Agricultire Department report said.

Iowa, the No.1 hog state, had 16.3million hogs on farms on June1, the report said, up 100,000 head. That’s up about 1percent from a year ago.

Nebraska had 4percent more hogs than a year ago, Minnesota had 2percent more hogs and Illinois had 1percent more hogs than a year ago.
