When the benchmark has been established regular checks will be made to ensure all semen is at least to that standard. The benchmark will become an integral part of BPEX’s soon-to-be-introduced quality standard for semen.

Not only can AI companies use the laboratory for semen testing but it can also be used by producers at a cost of between 36 and 325, depending on how many and what sort of testing they want carried out.

The on-farm element of the programme is being carried out by Angela Cliff who can be contacted on 01908 844744.

The equipment, which cost 330,000, uses a microscope and a video camera to scan a sample of semen much faster and more accurately than the human eye could manage. It has been purchased by BPEX for use at Leeds on behalf of the industry.
