Illinois farm pumps out pork

ILLINOIS - More than 3,000 sows idle away a summer afternoon, cooled by fans and water spray air conditioning, at the Jim Sheetz Family Farms near the small community of Colusa in Hancock County. They are only a small portion of the more than 120,000 pigs the farm will produce annually for Oakville–based TriOak Foods.

This state–of–the–art business, with a sharp eye for bottom–line efficiencies and environmental responsibility, was recognized in 2006 by Illinois Pork Producers Association as the Illinois Pork Producer Family of the Year. The award recognized outstanding work in promoting pork and noted the family exemplifies leadership skills at the county, state and national levels.

By any measure, the Sheetz operation is a complex business operation using an web of contractual agreements to insure profitability while maintaining a multi–generational commitment to this fertile slice of Midwestern farm land.
