The Prima farms group, which supplies the country's Polish arm Aminex is to double the number of sows it currently owns from 61,000 to 120,000, despite a current ban on beef and pork products from the country into Russia – formerly its biggest importer.

The loss of revenue from such a lucrative market, has forced Polish pig meet producers to look towards Western Europe's strongest markets.

“Russia's ban on pork and beef products hit Polish agriculture hard, as a result they had to find other outlets for their produce,” said Jean-Luc Meriaux, secretary general of the European livestock and meat trading union (UECBV).
