Wisconsin State Hog Inventory Unchanged from Last Quarter

WISCONSIN - Wisconsin had 430,000 hogs and pigs on September 1, unchanged from June 1 figures, but an increase of 10,000 head from 2005.

According to the state's agriculture department, market hogs totaled 375,000, unchanged from June 1, but up one percent from the previous year. The breeding has herd remained steady since June at 55,000 head.

The state's pig crop from June-August was at 230,000, up six percent from 2005. Sows farrowing during the quarter totaled 26,000, down 1,000 from the previous quarter, but up 1,000 from last year.

Farrowings have stayed in the 26,000 to 27,000 range during the past four quarters. Pigs per litter averaged 8.85, compared to 8.70 last quarter and last year.
