Minnesota Blaze likely accidental
MINNESOTA - The fire that killed about 3,000 piglets and 300 sows on a farm southeast of here was likely started by accident, police have said.
The blaze which started early Friday morning at Spring Hill Farm had engulfed a farrowing barn by the time firefighters arrived.
Police Chief Gerry Franek said the likely cause of the fire was an electrical fault. Auger motors, heaters, lights and generators in the barn could have been the source. The state fire marshal was helping to investigate the actual cause.
Authorities initially estimate up to 5,000 pigs have been killed. The loss is estimated at $1.5 million to $2 million.
