Canadian Hog plant environmental hearings on hold

CANADA - Environmental hearings into the proposed swine slaughterhouse in Winnipeg’s St. Boniface Industrial Park have been halted.

The head of the Clean Environment Commission, Terry Sargeant, said the government department that negotiated a deal with OlyWest has requested a revised business plan from the proponent, and so it doesn’t make sense to hold hearings.

“If the project doesn’t go ahead for some reason, I don’t want to spend a quarter of a million taxpayer dollars on hearings,” said Sargeant.

In December, Quebec-based Olymel and Saskatchewan's Big Sky Farms Inc. pulled out of the factory construction plan, leaving Manitoba-based Hytek Ltd. to pursue the project.
