JSR plays key role in Ukrainian expansion UK - JSR Genetics' excellent reputation has been instrumental in the signing of yet another big order from Eastern Europe, which follows the successful delivery of 700 pigs to the Ukraine in August. A second order has now been signed with stock delivered in December 2006. The latest in a long line of substantial orders for JSR Genetics in this part of the world, the contract will accelerate the development of a new commercial pig herd, including its own 'within herd' multiplication, located in the Volyn region of Ukraine.

Originally set up with JSR Genetics Large White and Landrace Grandparents using Yorker Terminal Sire line Boars, the existing herd of 700 animals will be increased to 1,366 following the order for an additional 666 pigs.

This is the second deal between JSR Genetics and the well-known Ukraine food business Vira 1 - part of the substantial Pan Kurchak group of food production and processing businesses.

"JSR is delighted to have signed yet another order with such a large and well-established organisation. The deal provides us with a fantastic opportunity to build on our success in Eastern Europe and to further reaffirm the international standing of the UK's genetics," said JSR chairman Tim Rymer.

Pork production in the Ukraine has increased to 84,200 tonnes - up 59.9% in the first 10 months of this year. The pigs delivered in April have adapted well to the local environment. They have undoubtedly made - and will continue to make - a significant contribution to this growth in production.

Angus Chambers (JSR's International Production Specialist) continues to work with the herd and staff in the Ukraine to ensure that it is established quickly and effectively, and to see that the daily pig production routines remain in place and are working well. All protocols are translated on to Vira 1 purchasing manager, Lyudmyla Romanyuk.

"In order to develop our new venture successfully, we needed to continue to source highly productive stock producing high yields of lean meat. JSR exceeded our expectations earlier this year and we are delighted to continue our relationship" she said.

"The drive in the Ukraine market is towards quality and productivity," she adds. "And we knew we needed continued help - not just in the supply of genetic material but in a more general sense to make sure this venture progresses as it should.

"The reputation that JSR has for support and technical expertise, as well as producing pigs that yield high levels of quality meat in the high value cuts, were key to our continuing relationship," added Miss Romanyuk.
