It is 30 years since the first Journal was produced by Prof. Richard Penny, who this year was awarded a National Honour of the CBE for his services to veterinary education and welfare. Prof. Stan Done, our senior scientific editor, also received the Dalrymple-Champneys award from the British Veterinary Association for outstanding merit, for the advancement of veterinary science. It is with sadness that we have to announce the death of Terry Heard, the chief editor of the Journal from 1982 until 1998. We are indeed fortunate, to still have the services of Judy Heard as our secretary.
The latest volume is packed with the usual mix of refereed articles, proceedings and a review of the papers given at this year's IPVS congress:
Refereed Section:
The refereed section contains 3 varied papers on oedema disease, reproductive performance in sows following the use of gonadotrophins at weaning and the effect of doxycycline on porcine proliferative enteropathy.
Proceedings Section:
This section contains 17 papers from the PVS meeting held in Down Hall, Stansted, in May 2006. There are important papers on the research needs and delivery for the UK pig industry and a section on the newly proposed internet-based pig health plans. There is a large section on reproduction including seasonal infertility, artificial insemination in Denmark, gilt acclimatization, abortions and leptospirosis. A session on respiratory disease follows, looking at viral pneumonias in particular.
General Section:
There is a comprehensive review of the novel IPVS congress papers given at Copenhagen, Denmark this summer by Stan Done. This is a valuable overview.
Abstracts of the papers can be viewed on the Pig Journal website, together with order forms, reference request service details (£6/copy) and news and information. An Index of volumes 1-50 is also available, free of charge on request, with orders of Volume 58.
CD-roms:
A CD of volumes 42-57 and 1-41 are also available, for those who prefer electronic versions.
