Slaughterhouse has undergone various investments Since 2000 and a new procedure for the slaughtering of pigs began in 2004. According to the Parliamentary Secretary, Dr. Francis Agius, this procedure allows pork products to be processed through the highest hygiene standards under veterinary surveillance, while ensuring that the product delivered to consumers is in tip-top condition.

Agius explained how the government has appointed a veterinary consultant and a slaughterhouse engineer to prepare a plan addressing all the required practices that require upgrading, including those concerning hygiene. “This does not mean that the current practices are not good enough, but there is always room for modernisation and betterment,” he said.

Discussions are also underway to change practices concerning the transportation of animals towards the slaughterhouse to ensure their protection.
