Advanced genetics open new markets for JSR
UK - The advanced breeding technology of JSR Genetics is opening up lucrative new markets in Cyprus, where producers have been impressed by the British breeder's work on improving carcase yields.
The company's top range Titan boars are creating a stir among the island's 100-plus producers, who have been quick to place orders for new parent stock from the UK.
This follows a seminar on the island in January 2007 when JSR's European Sales Director Paul Anderson and its Director of Research and Genetics, Dr Grant Walling, provided a comprehensive analysis of how advanced genetic technology could enhance the profitability of the Country's pig industry.
Local industry leader Loucas Andreou, who is managing director of LA Top Genetics (Cyprus) and who opened the conference, was so impressed by the JSR performance figures that he immediately placed orders for JSR stock to set up a Nucleus of 12X gilts. The Nucleus will produce the company's Genepacker Gold X gilts and the Titan boar on the island.
The performance of the Gold X has helped producers increase the number of pigs born alive to 12.8 - and Mr Andreou is now looking to add an additional multiplier to his business to meet long-term sales forecasts.
The farmers, who have traditionally just had one pig breeding company (Topigs) operating on the island, are particularly interested in JSR's work on CT scanning and use of Omega-3 fatty acids in supplement diets for boars to enhance semen production through its Prosperm Plus products.
The programme has already completed the first of many sales of locally produced Gold X gilts which were delivered in December 2006.
Commenting on the recent events Mr Andreou said "The pork industry in Cyprus has a need to become more competitive and will benefit enormously from JSR's advanced UK genetic stock"
