The provincial director of livestock production, Mr Josiah Cheruiyot, said the country was experiencing an acute shortage of pig and pig products.

Mr Cheruiyot attributed the increased demand to the recent outbreak of Rift Valley fever in some parts of the country, which saw the Government close down some slaughterhouses.

Het said the demand was also due to the increase of tourists visiting the country.

He said that it would be unfortunate to allow imports of pork whereas local farmers were capable of meeting the demand.

Mr Cheruiyot, who was speaking during a farmers' field day at Pororo area in Koibatek District, advised the farmers to also take up dairy farming, saying that those who had done so were doing good business.
