Mixed fortunes for livestock and arable farmers

UK - Pig farmers will face extra pressure on their profit margins over the next 12 months, while arable farmers growing grain should enjoy better times, says Nick MacIvor of building manufacturer A M Warkup.

"Many pig farmers fix feed prices annually and the contracts now being negotiated for the second half of 2007/8 are reflecting the significant increase in commodity prices - particularly grains. This makes the efficient use of pig feed all the more vital to profitable production.

Warkup welcomes the increase in the number of finisher houses recently or currently being constructed, and says this is as a result of sustained profits.

"It remains to be seen what happens when the inevitable downturn comes," says Mr MacIvor, "However, the message remains - sustained investment in efficiency is the only guarantee of a long term future."
