The breeding farm, south of the city in the north of Italy, is situated at an isolated location in the mountains, a vast distance from other pig herds. This makes at a perfect location for an SPF nucleus.

To achieve the highest SPF standard piglets of the new Italian nucleus were reared in special quarantine barns.

The nucleus has 500 sows of the company's K line and E line which are used to produce boars specific for the Parma ham market.

To achieve the highest standard of SPF, the farm is populated by a medicated early weaning operation. For this piglets were weaned at a young age, reared free of diseases by a strict medication scheme and housed off-site in quarantine barns.

With this new SPF nucleus, TOPIGS has strengthened its prominent status as a supplier for breeding boars for Parma ham production.
