Tesco says its sales of pork pies increased by 24% in the last year, and credits the UK’s growing “foodie” culture and a general pie revival.

The supermarket chain hopes it can broaden the pie’s appeal further with a new version using high-quality ingredients, including outdoor-bred pork which has not been cured.

Laura Fagan, the company’s convenience foods developer, said, “The pork pie is an icon of British culinary history and should rightfully be revered in a UK foodie hall of fame alongside the sandwich, fish and chips, shepherd’s pie and hotpot.
