Allendale sees quarterly hog inventory up over 2%

US - The United States Department of Agriculture is scheduled to release quarterly hog and pig herd inventory estimates Friday, September 28 at 2 PM Central.

Analytical firm Allendale Inc. expects the report to show the largest breeding herd in six years, marketings inflated by Canadian hog imports and a record slaughter for 2007.

Allendale sees the total number of U.S. hogs and pigs as of September 1 to be around 102.4% of a year ago. Hogs kept for breeding are pegged at 100.7% and hogs for marketing are placed at 102.6%.

Inventory weighing less than 60 pounds is estimated at 102.1% of a year ago, 60 to 119 pounders are seen at 102.6%; 120 to 179 pound hogs are projected at 102.8% and inventory at 180 pounds and over are placed at 103.4%.
