Behaviour, efficiency and secure access: Key developments for pig producers
NETHERLANDS - Nedap welcomed its business partners from across the world to its Velos Event 2007, held at their premises in Groenlo, The Netherlands, last week. The international delegates (pictured), learned about the various applications Nedap provides to pig producers, to help them make savings to running costs, feed efficiency and labour resources.
The guests were also treated to a course in 'Pig Signals'- an insight into behavioural traits and how understnding them can benefit management and production efficiency
Dr. Kees Scheepens explained how observing pig behaviour can help with management decisions. It can help stockmen determine environmental conditions and improve control methods.
Mr. Frits de Vries, owner and managing director of Leanent, discussed his “lean” approach to production. The system is already used by many production processes such as those used for producing cars, engines and office services.
With Velos, Nedap says it can provide a platform to allow innovation without the limitation of existing electronics. The company intends to broaden its application from Electronic Sow Feeding to further automation within pig production systems. This will enable staff to dedicate more time to animal husbandry, rather than spend it on more routine tasks such as feeding and weighing pigs.
By providing sensors to pick up the pig signals', Nedap says it can help producers improve management decisions and efficiency.
Taking security and traceability a step further
The flexible use of the Nedap Velos system was also demonstrated with the introduction of Velos Easy Access.
Access to farm buildings by staff, vets or feed trucks is automated with RFID badges. Velos Easy Access controls doors and gates and can be extended with cameras, lights and alarms. All accesses are being logged, providing users with full traceability and control of their farms hygienic program. Velos Easy Access can be accessed through the internet making it highly attractive to multi-site operations.
