BPISG action at IGD convention
The IGD annual convention is next Tuesday in central London. BPISG announced today that it will be outside the venue.
It says it is working with the Metropolitan Police to ensure an orderly demonstration. Speakers from Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons will be taking part in the IGD convention.
"We advised BPISG members two weeks ago to keep Tuesday, October 9, free in their diaries," said BPISG spokesman Ellen Furby this afternoon. "We are relying on the industry for an excellent turnout - not just BPISG members, but everyone who is prepared to fight for our collective future."
NPA will not be involved with the organisation of the demonstration but has been invited by BPISG to provide observers and spokesmen on the day. BPISG has asked BPEX representatives to be in attendance also.
"We are hoping Ladies in Pigs will bring their mobile kitchen," said Ms Furby. "We are sure the police who will be in attendance will appreciate a supply of British sausage butties and we would also like to be able to show supermarket executives what they will be missing if they don't help us get prices up quickly."
BPISG says it recognises that some retailers have followed Tesco's lead and taken steps to improve prices - but so far very little has trickled down to producers.
"We understand that the market imbalances caused by the foot-and-mouth export ban are causing difficulties for everyone, but we must persuade all retailers to support our cause now, or in January a third of British producers will be quitting production," she added.
Those who are taking part in the demonstration will have to make a very early start.
BPISG has asked that all those who are going to attend let it know by email. Got to NPA website for more details
