INDIANA - While opponents said a proposed 8,000-hog swine farm raises environmental concerns, supporters said future farmers will depend on such large operations for their livelihoods.

More than 50 people met at Matter Park on Monday to discuss the proposed concentrated animal feeding operation, or CAFO, near Marion. The city is about 60 miles northeast of Indianapolis.

John and Becky Stuber have filed for a general construction permit for the farm, which would be located at Grant County roads 200 North and 500 East, said Ken Ellis, director of the county plan commission. The proposal is currently under review by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

A recording said a number listed under John Stuber’s name in the Marion area was out of service or had been changed when The Associated Press called seeking comment Monday night.
