African swine fever registered in Russia

MOSCOW - The first outbreak of African swine fever in Russia has been registered in a group of wild boars.

The disease was detected in Chechnya near the border with Georgia, food safety watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor spokesman Alexei Alekseenko said. African swine fever had not previously been recorded in Russia.

The disease may have been borne on infected animals from Georgia and spread in Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Armenia, Alekseenko said.
