The idea, which is still in its infancy, would give producers vouchers for PCV2 vaccines as part of a project to measure improvements in herd health, welfare, mortality and physical performance

. All English pig levypayers would be eligible to join the programme.

Stressing no firm decisions had yet been taken, BPEX Chief Executive Mick Sloyan said the voucher programme would last nine months and would entail accurate recording during vaccination and for the following nine months.

There would be benefits to the pig industry at both the individual unit and national level through this project:

  • Independent evaluation of the efficacy and cost benefits of PCV2 vaccines
  • Development of a sustainable strategy for the control of Circovirus diseases in pigs
  • Increased confidence within the industry through the commitment demonstrated to improving herd health.
