'Rare Breed Theme Hopes to Stave off Industry Meltdown

UK - Pig breeders are urging shoppers to throw their support behind their industry, in a bid to stem the loss of county jobs and livelihoods.

British Pig Farmers have launched a major campaign in an attempt to save the sector by winning a fairer price for pigs.

"Save a rare breed from extinction - no we don't mean the pig" is being advertised nationally.

But, according to the Lincolnshire Echo the campaign is too late for many farmers who have been fighting to get a better deal and are now going out of business. More businesses could yet go to the wall and the UK pig industry is facing meltdown.

The reason is The massive rises in feed prices - pushed up by rocketing world wheat prices - has led to price hikes for including bread, milk and other basic food items. Most pig producers say they are losing £26 per pig sold which over the year could stack up to an industry loss of more than £200 million.
