New Pork Leader has No Pigs

US - Dave Moody is believed to be the first president of the Iowa Pork Producers Association who doesn't own any pigs - an indication of how much Iowa's pork industry has changed in the past two decades, says teh organisation.

Iowa hog production still comprises thousands of independent owner-operators, but it has become increasingly dominated by a few large operations that either pay wages to employees or contract with farmers to raise hogs, says a report in the Des Moines Register.

The move to contract-feeding hogs has been resisted by some producers during the past two decades, but economics has, in many cases, dictated the change.

Moody, 44, who took over last month as president, is employed by H & K Enterprise, a 600-sow operation that produces 12,000 hogs a year in a farrow-to-finish business and also markets breeding stock for Danbred North America.
