PEI Plant Will Close at End of Month

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND - The doomed pig processing plant in Charlottetown will close on the 28 March. All 85 staff will lose their jobs.

In spite of numerous efforts to save the plant no buyer has come forward and closure is no inevitable. In a report for CBC News, employee Shawn Curley said even though workers knew the plant was shutting down, it was still very difficult to accept the news.

"I guess the disbelief was still there. We knew it was coming but when you finally get the word, it took you aback," he said.

The plant is owned by National and Organic Food Group Inc., which includes a Quebec company and a few Island farmers.
