US - With a stink being raised by residents over large hog farms planned for Van Wert and Paulding counties, county commissioners, township trustees and health department personnel are pointing complaints toward Columbus.

"Unless they change something at the state level, there will be nothing we can do," admitted Commissioner Gary Adams. "That's what we need to work on."

The battle has heated up over the past few weeks with the organization of a group of Van Wert County residents calling itself Citizens Acting Responsibly for our Environment (CARE). That group held its second informational meeting Wednesday night to raise awareness of the situation. However, according to Jason Menchhofer of the Van Wert County Health Department, some of that information needs to be more fully investigated.

"There is reason for concern, but I just hope the concerns are being based on factual information," Menchhofer noted. "My best advice is to try to get the whole story of what happened in other localities when those cases are referenced. That's what I would encourage people to do is to seek out all the facts and make sure their concerns are based on things that are well established."
