Thua Thien Hue is the latest province to fall victim to the disease. Viet Nam Department of Animal Health statistics claim that PRRS had hit 434 communes and wards of 31 districts and towns of the six provinces of Thanh Hoa, Ha Tinh, Nghe An, Quang Nam, Lam Dong and Thua Thien Hue in the central and central highlands regions by 15 April. It has forced the culling of over 149,000 pigs in a bid to control the spread of infection.

Thanh Hoa alone has 337 communes and wards affected by the disease with a total of over 134,000 affected pigs.

The authorities fear a similar epidemic to that which hit China's pig industry last year, leaving supply shortages and aiding the increase in pork prices.
