Danish Pig Production Declining

DENMARK - Danish pig production is falling, whilst exports of weaners and finishers to Germany are increasing — and if this trend continues Danish Crown’s slaughterhouses will become increasingly unviable, according to a Danish press report.

For several years now German abattoirs have been paying better prices than Danish Crown. For instance last week the German quote was 134p whilst unhpappy Danish Crown producers were getting only 118p.

One commentator fears the low Danish price means some units that are currently empty will not restock — because producers no longer believe promises of better times to come.

Denmark’s herd census will be published at the end of this month. It is expected the figures will show the national herd is continuing to decline.
