Pfizer: FDA Approves Swine Respiratory Disease Drug
US - The U.S. Food Drug Administration (FDA) has approved EXCENEL® RTU EZ (ceftiofur hydrochloride) Sterile Suspension for the treatment and control of swine respiratory disease. New Excenel RTU EZ is an improved formulation that makes injections easier for user convenience.Studies show that Excenel RTU EZ is significantly more syringeable when compared to Excenel RTU1.
Another enhancement is its new yellow skirt color for easier bottle identification of open vials by users.
When used according to label, Excenel RTU EZ provides the same rapid action, outstanding efficacy and safety profile that producers have trusted in Excenel RTU. More than 20 years have lapsed since the first introduction of ceftiofur as a livestock respiratory antibiotic, and the susceptibility of targeted pathogens has not changed appreciably.
The short four-day pre-slaughter withdrawal period makes it an ideal antibiotic for pigs in the finishing phase.

"Excenel RTU EZ offers the same effective treatment and protection against major swine bacterial pneumonia pathogens, but is now easier to administer. The new packaging makes bottle identification much easier and will help reduce the chance of confusion between products when used on the farm" said Steve Sornsen, DVM, MS, director of swine veterinary services for Pfizer Animal Health.
"This fast-acting formula is a great anti-infective option to use in high value pigs in the late finishing stage due to its proven efficacy, safety profile and short pre-slaughter withdrawal time," he added.
The intramuscular injection of Excenel RTU EZ establishes therapeutic plasma concentrations in less than one hour to effectively treat and control a broad spectrum of pathogens that cause swine respiratory disease including Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, Salmonella choleraesuis and Streptococcus suis type 2.
The product should be administered intramuscularly in swine and requires no refrigeration or reconstitution.
As with all drugs, Excenel RTU EZ should not be used in animals found to be hypersensitive to the product. Excenel RTU EZ has a pre-slaughter withdrawal period of 4 days.
