Danish Abattoirs Threatened by Weaner Exports

DENMARK - The hemorrhaging of Denmark's pig industry accelerated in the first half of this year with exports of weaners increasing by 563,000 pigs to a record 2.94m pigs.

There are two reasons why more producers are sending pigs to Germany — to get better prices and to bypass Denmark's increasingly onerous environmental regulations. (It is easier for producers to get permission to expand weaner production than to expand finisher production.)

According to Bent Claudi Lassen, chairman of Danish Bacon and Meat Council, if weaner exports continue to increase, it will be difficult for Danish slaughterhouses to remain efficient. He has called on the Danish government to stop over-egging European legislation.
