United Kingdom Slaughter Statistics - September 2008

UK - The numbers of clean pigs and sows and boars sent for slaughter in the UK during August lowered slightly on the July and June figures, according to the latest figures from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

In August 665,000 clean pigs went for slaughter compared to 846,000 in July and 670,000 in June, where June and August were four week months.

The number of sows and boars sent for slaughter in August were 16,000 compared to 19,000 in July and 17,000 in June

The average carcase rose slightly to 76.8 kg for clean pigs. Also, the sow and boar average slaughter weight rose to 155.4 kg in August compared to 149.7 kg in July.

In total, the UK produced 53,000 tonnes of pig meat during August compared to 67,000 tonnes in July, 53,000 tonnes in June and 51,000 tonnes in May.
