RSPCA: Plan for Clearer Pork Labelling Underway

However, this isn't the case with pigmeat. As a result, the various descriptions used on packs may not be consistent, and some consumers may be confused.

So the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) farm animals department is working with industry representatives to develop clear definitions to underpin such descriptors as "indoor", "free-range", "outdoor bred", "outdoor reared", "Barn" and "British Farm Standard".

The process is expected to be completed by the end of the year and the definitions will be included as recommendations in the next edition of RSPCA Welfare Standards for Pigs.

Use of the new definitions will be required on Freedom Food packaging and promotional material.
