Action Leads to Profound Consequences

DENMARK - A group of Danish pig producers tore up their contracts with Danish Crown earlier this year and it is beginning to look as if their action will have profound consequences for the giant cooperative.

Danpork, the company founded by the pig producers — who were disenchanted with Danish Crown's low prices — has been profitably exporting pigs to Germany over the past four months and is now inviting new producer shareholders to join it.

General manager Steen Thaysen says that by spring 2009 the company will be able to handle a quarter of a million pigs a year. And within another year or so that figure will reach 500,000, he says.

Producers who are sending their pigs to Danpork are reporting an “extremely positive“ experience.
