Danish Food Safety Standard Wins Recognition

DENMARK - The Global Red Meat Standard (GRMS) has received formal approval from the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), an association of the world’s leading food safety experts.

The GRMS is the customised standard for meat production and was created by the Danish meat industry with the aim of gaining international recognition.

All Danish co-operative slaughterhouses and cutting plants have implemented the GRMS standard since 2006, when the GRMS was established on the basis of combining international quality assurance requirements with a focus on food safety, while also addressing specific customer requirements and the unique production environment of the meat industry.

The GRMS is one of a number of food quality standards the Danish slaughtering industry conforms to, as part of requirements set by its customers. It offers consumers reassurance that the highest standards have been adhered to throughout the production process, while retailers gain the peace of mind that they are buying meat from producers and manufacturers who have met recognised industry standards.

Heidie Klingenberg Jørgensen, Quality Consultant, Danish Agriculture and Food Council said, “We are delighted that the Danish standard has now been formally approved by some of the world’s leading food experts, producers and retailers. It is also important that the GRMS can demonstrate equivalency to other major international standards, such as the BRC Global Standard.”
