UK Slaughter Statistics - March 2010

UK - UK clean pig slaughterings were four per cent higher than in February 2009 at 704 thousand head. Pig meat production was 58 thousand tonnes, a rise of seven per cent on February 2009.

In February, 704,000 clean pigs were sent to slaughter, compared to 862,000 in January, which contained five weeks, and 721,000 in December. The number of sows and boars sent for slaughter in February was 18,000, compared to 20,000 in January and 15,000 in December.

The average dressed carcase weights for clean pigs in February was 79.1 kg, compared to 78.9 kg in January and 78.2 kg in December. On the other hand, the average slaughter weights for sows and boars dropped slightly in February at 155.1 kg, compared to 156.6 kg in January and 158.0 kg in December.

Overall, the UK produced 58,000 tonnes in February, compared to 71,000 tonnes in January and 59,000 tonnes in December.
