HCM City Under Threat from Blue Ear Pig Disease
VIET NAM - A recent test on pork in Ho Chi Minh City has shown that the southern city is at risk from an outbreak of blue ear pig disease or porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), the local animal health department said last week.

Citing VnExpress, ThanhNien News.com reports that tests were carried out on 32 pork samples taken from sources all over the city and the virus was present in four.
Seventeen samples taken from pork imported from other provinces also tested positive, the news web site reported.
Previous tests done in the neighbouring provinces of Long An, Dong Nai, and Tay Ninh also found many samples containing the virus, it said.
The Animal Health Department, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said nearly 50,000 pigs in more than ten provinces and cities have been infected with the disease, which causes reproductive failure in breeding stock and respiratory tract illness in young pigs.
On 3 April, northern province Hai Duong also reported cases, nine months after the department had announced that Viet Nam had successfully curbed the spread of the disease together with foot-and-mouth and bird flu last June.
