The NGO is trying to woo farmers away from the traditional groundnut crop. RDT is trying to impress upon the farmers on the need to go for commercial ventures to ensure guaranteed income It is promoting the establishment of piggery units in view of the huge demand for pork in Benguluru and Kerala apart from the local market.

To popularise the concept, the NGO is planning to establish one piggery unit in all the 63 mandals to inspire farmers to practically study its immense profit logistics.

The moving force behind the economic empowerment programme is Manchu Ferror, director of RDT and Chalapati Rao, director of ecology, who is instrumental in popularising the economic empowerment concept.

RDT supplies 25 piglets for each unit set up by the beneficiary who is required to build his own shed for the piglets.

A piglet weighing 30 to 40 kgs is sold at Rs.4,000 per piglet. A piglet weighing 100 kgs sells for more than Rs.5,000. The piglets multiply very fast and the 25 piglets yield more than 262 of its kind.

The pigs eat vegetable waste and also maize. Already piggery units are running at Kuderu, Naglur near Dharmavaram and Uravakonda etc.

Mr Chalapati Rao told The Hindu that the White Yorkshire English breed piglets were being supplied to the beneficiaries who are enthusiastic to rear pigs and earn handsomely.

RDT is making arrangements for creating a marketing infrastructure, particularly to Kerala State. As of now there is heavy demand for setting up piggery units and hundreds of applications are pending with RDT.

The NGO is going slow to make the scheme a big success among the downtrodden sections of people in rural areas.
